From the preface:
"The Sea Explorers’ Institute is a pioneering organisation in the field of maritime exploration, training and research in West Bengal. The Institute opened a cultural window Nadir Sange Dekha (Tryst with the River) in 2002. Many scholars including late Prof. Amlan Datta delivered lectures in seminar organised by the Institute. But this is for the first time that the Institute ventured to publish an atlas of changing river courses in West Bengal. We are grateful to Dr. Kalyan Rudra, an eminent river scientist of our time, for executing this project.
The rivers of West Bengal are in an alarming state of decay posing an ecological crisis and threat to our agrarian economy. The strategy to combat this hydro-ecological crisis suffered from lack of baseline information and it had been a crying need that this crucial gap should be plugged. I hope, this atlas will serve the long-awaited demand of the researchers and planners."
