Humphrey Gilbert-Carter (1884–1969) was the first academic director of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden from 1921 until 1950. In Descriptive Labels for Botanic Gardens, first published in 1924, Gilbert-Carter gives examples of informative labels that could be used in botanic gardens 'so as to give information as well as pleasure to as many people as possible'. Descriptive Labels for Botanic Gardens will be of value to anyone with an interest in the history of science education or the history of botany in Britain.
