This book follows the first large scale evaluation carried out by CNCFlora, which was consolidated in the Livro Vermelho da Flora do Brasil published in 2013. For that evaluation CNCFlora assessed the risk of extinction of about 4,600 species of national flora based on previous studies, both national and regional, that had sited these species as being possibly threatened.
Among the Brazilian biomes with the highest conversion rate of native forest into anthropogenic environments is the Cerrado. The encroachment of agribusiness into vast tracts of land in central Brazil in recent decades has caused a rapid disappearance of the habitats and ecosystems characteristic of this biome. Additionally, the over-exploitation of some species has led to the depletion of their populations at an alarming rate. Many species of plants and animals are currently endangered in this biome, some of them critically endangered. In the present work, 578 species cited in the book Plantas Raras do Cerrado were assessed as to their risk of extinction.
The heart of this book is a careful risk assessment that focuses on these Cerrado plants and on their environments using standardized and internationally accepted criteria.
