This book provides an overview of recent data on the distribution and features of lateralization of limb function in vertebrates, particularly mammals. The focus of the monograph is to give a detailed description of the lateralized functions of the front (upper) limbs in quadrupedal, bipedal and marsupial mammals studied in captivity and in the wild. For the first time it shows the lateralization in marsupial cubs in manipulative activity at the stage of permanent presence in the mother's pouch. Comparisons of lateralization in bipedal and quadrupedal species are made, as well as the study of lateralization in bimanual manipulations previously only studied among primates. Also demonstrated for the first time in mammals that do not belong to the order Primates is the influence of the animal's body position in the manifestation of the asymmetric use of the forelimbs. In the course of two expeditions to Australia the authors for the first time obtained data about motor lateralization in marsupials in nature. It is possible to directly compare the data on the preference of one limb from one species of animal in nature and in captivity under identical behaviours. The influence of various factors (the complexity and nature of the action, sex, age) on the direction and strength of lateralization in different species of marsupial is discussed. A comparison of lateralization of functions of the front (upper) limb of marsupials and placental mammals is made. The authors consider the evolutionary aspects of the development of severe handedness in humans, including due to its bipedalism. The book will be of interest to zoologists, physiologists, evolutionary biologists, experts in the field of brain asymmetry and the evolution of man, teachers and students at biological faculties of universities, as well as all those interested in human and mammalian evolution.
