This book seeks to clarify the history and theory of capitalist development. It provides an outline to the main concepts of capitalist theories of development and a series of critiques of the main problems that capitalist development still has to solve around the world. The book also includes an examination of key sectors of capitalist development - electronics, automobiles, agribusiness, apparel and the cross-cutting areas of commodity chains and women's work). These chapters ask if capitalism cannot "develop the Third World" through these industries, then how can it do so at all? The contributors argue that not even the most enthusiastic proponents of the capitalist road to development would argue that capitalism has solved all its problems in the Third World.
