About this book

The transformation and industrialization of rural China is the underlying theme of this book. Using case studies of selected regions in south China where rural changes have been particularly dramatic, the book discusses and analyses: how, in the process of rural transformation, capital and labour are mobilized and reallocated; some of the problems and consequences of rapid rural industrialization; efforts of local governments to stabilize agriculture during the transition; and the loss of farm land from urbanization and rural industrial growth.
