This is a demonstration that poverty remains a universal phenomenon, even as most parts of the world see increase in affluence of varying degrees. Cutting across the globe, the study focuses on 24 countries including the industrialised economies, planned economies, developing market economies, mixed economies and the least developed economies. Professor Khusro examines the causes of poverty and of development, the impact of colonialism and the industrial revolution and policies for reducing global poverty today. Biography
A. M. KHUSRO is currently Chairman of the Finance Commission, Government of India; Chairman of the Institute of Economic Growth and of the Aga Khan Foundation (India). He is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Delhi and has had a distinguished career in academia and public service. He was Ambassador of India in Germany (1980-1982) and has represented the Prime Minister of India abroad at the Conference of the Club of Rome (1978), at UNCTAD II (1968) and on numerous other occasions. He was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit by the German government. He has served as Vice Chancellor and Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. He has been Visiting Professor at the Fletcher Universities of London, Leeds, Manchester, Sussex and MIT. He has been President of the Indian Economic Association, a Director of Air India and editor of the Financial Express. He has written many books and articles.
