In this first bivalve volume, we find such gastronomicaliy important groups as mussels and oysters, together with the taxonomically difficult scallops, which are likewise esteemed at the table and, beyond that, beloved by many shell collectors because of their colorful and differently sculptured valves. There are also the small taxodont bivalve families of which many species are virtually unknown to the average shell amateur ana which never have been figured in color before. Furthermore, the arks in the subfamily Anadarinae, among which we recognize some recent invaders to the Mediterranean, whether as Lessepsian migrant or by accidental introduction such as via larvae-bearing ballast water from ships.
