Nymphalidae Part 1 deals with Tribe Argynnini, genera Argynnis, Issoria, Brenthis, and Argyreus.
From the foreword:
"In the systematization of the Argynnini taxa the author has kept into consideration the following main facts:
- the studied material (thousands of specimens from private and museums collections) shows a high level of variation
- most of the Argynnini species are active migrators producing a considerable transfer of characters between different populations
- the variability generates adaptive characters related to the main environmental factors, therefore in similar conditions similar characters have to be found.
Starting from these considerations all described taxa have been joined into main landscapes if the species have a large continuous distribution area. In many cases the borders of the subspecies are somehow conventional. All published taxa, at specific and subspecific rank, are mentioned in the text as well as all the wide-spread aberrations. A discussion about synonyms has been left out of the present work, although it could evoke a mass of criticism in the address of the author. Only objective criteria, such as genetic researches with statistic calculations, will enable to clear the taxa arrangement in the Argynnini. "
