About this book

Part II of Austral Hepaticae treats two of the largest and most complex suborders of the order Jungermanniales. The first suborder, the Cephaloziineae, includes some four families, of which the largest and most complex, the Cephaleziaceae, contains five subfamilies, with some 12 genera. The second suborder, the Jungermannlineae, includes some six families, ten subfamilies, and 40 genera. In total, some 69 genera are studied. As in Part I, each genus/ subgenus is illustrated with both gametophytic and sporophytic details, and usually cytological details (drawn from the living plant). Over 2700 individual figures on 224 plates, drawn (with isolated exceptions) by the author, often from living plants, have been prepared for this volume.

Media reviews

"Austral Hepaticae is beside the monumental Hepaticae and Anthocerotae of North America one of the main works of R.M. Schuster. Austral Hepaticae tries to provide a modern synthesis of the hepatic flora of the Southern Hemisphere, a summation of what the author has learned in over four decades in this region of the world. Also, the author tries to provide a modern synthesis of the definition of families and genera of liverworts.

Part II of Austral Hepaticae treats two of the largest and most complex suborders of the leafy Hepaticae, the Jungermanniales: the Cephaloziineae and the Jungermanniineae. The Cephaloziineae includes four families, of which the largest and most complex are the Cephaloziaceae, with 12 genera. The Jungermanniineae includes six families with 40 genera. In total 69 genera are studied. Each genus/subgenus is illustrated with these for Schuster typical drawings with both gametophytic and sporophytic characters, also often with cytological characters.

In total the book is illustrated with over 2700 figures on 224 plates. For smaller genera synoptic keys are presented.

That's one of the greatest works of R.M. Schuster. It is already by this time a standard flora of the Hepaticae of the Southern Hemisphere, surely it will be unsurpassed and it is an absolute necessity also for a private bryological library."
