About this book

Spanning some 3,500 miles of the African continent, from Ethiopia in the north to Mozambique in the south, the Great Rift Valley is home to an astounding array of flora and fauna, including the highest concentration of grassland animals anywhere and three of the world's four great apes - chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. Pavitt, who has lived in the region for 45 years, covers the evolution, indigenous cultures, and European exploration, through text and stunning photography.

Biography

Nigel Pavitt arrived in Kenya in 1955 as an 18 year old British Army soldier. He fell in love with the country and has remained ever since, serving 20 years in the African Rifles, and then as an official in the Kenya government. Retired from public service, he is commercially involved in an ostrich farm and a rose-growing business but spends all his free time traveling throughout Africa photographing landscapes and people and documenting African history. He lives in Nairobi, Kenya in the Karen district, made famous by Karen Blixen, the writer Isaac Dinesen.
