About this book

Comprehensive guide to the understanding of seismograms in terms of physical propagation processes within the Earth. Focuses on the observation of earthquakes and man-made sources on all scales, for both body waves and surface waves. Discusses local and regional seismic events, global wave propagation, and the three-dimensional Earth. Combines observation and theoretical development with a strong visual focus.

Contents

Part III. Local and Regional Events: 17. Near events; 18. Propagation effects at near distances; 19. Regional phases I -- propagation in the crust and uppermost mantle; 20. Regional phases II -- The influence of structure; 21. Propagation in the upper mantle; 22. Upper mantle structure; 23. Analysis of regional and far-regional seismograms; Part IV. Global Wave Propagation: 24. The nature of the global wavefield; 25. Body waves in the mantle; 26. Body waves and Earth's core; 27. Surface waves and modal analysis; 28. Receiver based studies; 29. Analysis of seismic records; Part V. The Three-Dimensional Earth: 30. The influence of heterogeneity; 31. Imaging the Earth; 32. 3-D global structure; 33. Mapping the lithosphere and upper mantle; Appendix: paths and travel times; Bibliography; Index.

Biography

Brian Kennett is a Professor in the Seismology Group at the Research School of Earth Sciences, The Australian National University, and Deputy Director of the Australian National Seismic Imaging Resource Research Facility. Professor Kennett's research interests involve the development of interpretational techniques for seismic records, with the object of extracting detailed information about the nature of the seismic velocity distribution within the Earth, and the character of seismic sources. He is currently President of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI)}, and was Vice-President from 1991-1999. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and the Australian Academy of Sciences, and an Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society. Professor Kennett was an Editor of Geophysical Journal International from 1979-1999, and since 1985 has been an Associate Editor of Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors. He is the author of Seismic Waves in Stratified Media (1983; Cambridge University Press), compiler of the IASPEI 1991 Seismological Tables, and over 160 research papers.
