About this book

The guide begins in Johannesburg itself and covers the most popular haunts in and around the city, such as Bruma Lake flea market, Gold Reef City, the Witwatersrand Botanical Garden and the Sterkfontein Caves. The reader is then taken further afield to diverse places that include Pretoria, the Magaliesberg, Sun City and the Lost City, before moving on to picturesque areas along Tom Pass, Pilgrim's Rest and the Blyde River Canyon, en route to the world-famous Kruger National Park. Also covered are small, further-flung dorps, which are gaining popularity for their special activities, for instance bird-watching and trout-fishing.

Biography

Duncan Guy is a freelance journalist whose main interest is offbeat travel, which includes cycling and hitching around Africa. He worked for Out There magazine for two years, but most of his work is published in newspapers such as The Star, the Sunday Times, the Natal Witness, Business Day and the Scotsman (in Edinburgh). Although this is his first book, he has been a journalist since 1983, and regards himself as an 'editorial hawker' out of respect for the informal working sector of Africa. He lives in Bez Valley, Johannesburg, with his wife and their young son.
