This text represents Professors Sigurdsson and Carey's years of teaching a volcanology course with a strong environmental theme to geologists and general science majors. It utilises the environmental impact of volcanic eruptions as a means of teaching many fundamental scientific principles of volcanic activity and their relationship with the Earth's interior, and processes taking place in the biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. Thus, although this book covers volcanology, an important sub-field of Earth Science, it is much broader in scope than "traditional" volcanology texts, as it also addresses the numerous environmental aspects of vulcanism. Science boxes appear throughout text to highlight various background information. A text-specific Web site contains additional material, figures, movie clips, and links and a CD-ROM is included, with an extensive collection of colour photographs, video clips, maps and other images that help explain topics addressed in the text.
