Seeds of Woody Plants in China has been compiled under the auspices of the National Service Center for State-Owned Forest Farms and Woody Plant Seed and Seedling Affairs of the Forestry Administration.

76 scholars and specialists from forestry colleges and univrsities, forestry and botany research institutes and woody plant seed and seedling production and administrative departments all over the country participate in the preparation of the publication of the book.

In principle, Seeds of Woody Plants in China was compiled with genus as the basic refit. Totally, 492 genera of woody plants,belonging respectively to 132 families, are treated of. With reference to tree species, 1 222 species, 3 subspecies, 45 varieties, 4 forms and 2 cultivars have been dealt with, totaliug 1 276 different species. And a small number of exotic tree species successfully introduced from abroad ale included.

In Seeds of Woody Plants in China, gymnospermae have been arranged according to Cheng Wanchun' system (1978), while angiospermae to the revised J. Hutchinson' system (1959), though both have been slightly supplemented.
