Biography

Michael O'Donoghue is a Director of the Gemmological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain, and Lecturer in Gemmology at London Metropolitan University. He was Curator of Earth Sciences at The British Library until 1991 and has visited gem-bearing locations in many parts of the world on behalf of governments and international bodies. He has written more than 20 books and edited a number of journals in the field of mineralogy, geological information and gemstones. Louise Joyner has a background in geology and is a Fellow of the Geological Society. She has worked in Archaeological science at the Fitch Laboratory, British School, at Athens, Greece, the Department of Archaeology and Prehistory, University of Sheffield, and is currently at the Department of Scientific Research, the British Museum, London, UK. A Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, she has a Diploma in Gemmology and was awarded the Anderson-Bank prize is 2000. Her research interests include gemmology, lithics, ancient pigments, ceramics, plasters and mudbricks.
