Formally established in 1976 with the formation of the American Sociological Association's Section on Environmental Sociology, the field emerged in response to widespread societal recognition of the significance of environmental problems in the 1970s and has fluorished ever since. RILEY E. DUNLAP is Boeing Distinguished Professor of Environmental Sociology at Washington State University. WILLIAM MICHELSON is S.D. Clark Professor of Sociology at University of Toronto, where he is also currently Associate Dean for the Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
