About this book

James Hutton was an 18th century gentleman farmer with an interest in rocks, at a time when Bishop Ussher's careful calculation of the age of the Earth (6000 years) held sway. Seeing the formation of irregular strata, he realised that it must be much older. Encouraged by the enquiring spirit of contemporary Edinburgh and friends such as David Hume and James Watt, he pursued his controversial theory.
