About this book

Tinbergen was a complex and interesting character, a pioneer in the field of animal studies, who also published controversial research into the problems of childhood autism. The fact that it is now possible to analyse the behaviour of animals in their natural environment with rigour and precision is due in no small part to Tinbergen. This book has been written by a fellow scientist and friend, who knew him well and worked with him closely.

Media reviews

"An impressive tribute to a brilliant scientist. Kruuk gives us a comprehensive, warts-and-all account of the life of one of the 20th century's most distinguished biologists and his contributions to the development of the field of animal behavior. In doing so, Kruuk also shows what science is really like.... His book demonstrates quite beautifully that scientific endeavor in all its imperfection can lead to great results."--Science
