About this book

Language: English with French summary

The distribution and substratum associations of Bryozoa from the littoral and shallow-shelf waters of Ghana are described. Observation of living colonies has provided information on predator, cleaning and symbiotic associations, larval life and settlement, early colony development and competition, frontal budding, frontal shield ontogeny, tentacle protrusion, avicularian behaviour and function and growth rates. Keys for the identification of the majority of west African species are given. A total of 135 species is described, of which 8 are considered to be new (Tretosina modema, Micropora robusta, Gemellipora adhaerens, Pachycleithonia africana, Cosciniopsis castanea, Schizotheca Ievis, Turbicellepora turricula, Alcyonidium sanguineum). A checklist of 222 west African bryozoan species with their known geographical ranges is given, and faunal distributions in space and time are discussed. Appendices include notes on localities and communities, breeding seasons, colony colour and the phylum Entoprocta.
