The earliest information about the fauna of Opiliones In the western subreglon of tropical Central Africa west of the large lakes Tanganyika, Kivu and others was published by Soerensen in 1896 and 1910. The main part of our knowledge however, is derived from a series of studies by Roewer, published between 1923 and 1961, and three publications by Lawrence (1951, 1957, and 1962). The Musée Royal de I'fAfrique Centrale, Tervuren, has had an unclassified collection of Opiliones in its possession that was collected between 1948 to 1960. This publication describes the author's work on that collection, which contained a total of about 900 specimens, belonging to 72 species, of which 61 or 84% are new, and classified in 28 genera, of which 12 new. Three new subfamilies have been created, Irumuinae of the Assamiidae family, Zairebiantinae of the Biantidae and Odontobuninae of the Phalangiidae.
