The history of extinction in the wild, and the present status of the European bison, Bison bonasus, is reviewed, along with the factors thought to be responsible for its current distribution. The authors examine the genetic structure of the breeding lines, and resulting hybrids between them. Following an analysis of threats to bison populations, and research needs of the future, the report concludes with a series of country-by-country Action Plans for European bison conservation strategy.
