About this book

The family Corylophidae in the West Palaearctic region is revised and a new classification proposed. The family is now divided into four subfamilies: Peltinodinae; Corylophinae; Orthoperinae; Rypobiinae. The subfamily Rypobiinae consists of Rypobiini and a new tribe Gloeosomatini. A phylogenetic diagram is provided, based on 30 character states. Morphology of the spermathecae in this family is introduced with appropriate terminology. All existing type specimens are examined and lectotypes designated. Keys for the determination of all subfamilies, tribes, genera and species are provided. Morphological structures of all genera are re-appraised and figures are provided of: pro- and metathorax, head, antennae, proleg for all genera; and habitus, microsculpture, penis with internal armature and spermatheca for all species.

The following taxa are new to science: Clypastraea reitteri sp. n.; Clypastraea palmi sp. n.; Arthrolips klapperichi sp. n.; Orthoperus loebli sp. n.; Rypobius praetermissus sp. n.; Gleosomatini trib. n.

The genus Holopsis Broun is recognised and introduced as new to the faunal region. The following synonymies are established: Holopsis Broun, 1883 (= Corylophodes Matthews, 1885, = Peltinodes Paulian, 1950); Clypastraea Haldeman, 1842 (= Aspidocha Gistel, 1848, = Sacium LeConte, 1852, = Parmulus Gundlach, 1854, = Clypeastodes Casey, 1900, = Sacinops Paulian, 1950, = Aposacium Paulian, 1950); Clypastraea brunnea Brisout, 1863 (= C. damryi Reitter, 1884); Arthrolips Wollaston, 1854 (= Lepadodes Matthews, 1887, = Sacina Broun, 1893, = Meioderus Matthews, 1899, = Meizoderus Matthews, 1899, = Sericoderistes Reitter, 1913, = Alloparmulus Paulian, 1950, = Pseudoparmulus Paulian, 1950); Arthrolips nana (Mulsant & Rey, 1861) (= Sacium rhenanum Reitter, 1877); Arthrolips picea (Comolli, 1837) (= A. regularis Reitter, 1877, = A. ferrugatus Reitter, 1877, = A. simoni Reitter, 1885, = Sacium purvum Matthews, 1886, = A. laevicollis Rey, 1889, = A. sicardi Guillebeau, 1897, = Sacium mundum Matthews, 1899, = Sacium longipes Matthews, 1899, = A. scaber Matthews, 1899); Arthrolips convexiuscula (Motschulsky, 1849) (= A. aequale Wollaston, 1854, = Sacium densatum Reitter, 1877, = Clypeaster nitens Rey, 1889, = A. doderoi Reitter, 1898, = Sacium oblongum Matthews, 1899); Arthrolips humilis (Rosenhauer, 1856) (= A. rufithorax Jacquelin du Val, 1859, = Sacium marseulii Matthews, 1890, = A. vittatus Guillebeau, 1897); Arthrolips obscura (Shalberg, C.R., 1833) (= Sacium discedens Jacquelin du Val, 1859. = Sacium corticinum Thomson, 1863, = A. sanctaebalmae Abeille de Perrin, = A. polypori Fiori, 1915. = A. bosnicus Obenberger, 1922); Aposericoderus revelierei (Reitter, 1878) (= Sericoderus flaviventris Reitter, 1891, = S. chobauti Reitter, 1900, = S. masoni Reitter, 1900, = Aposericoderus variegatus Paulian, 1950); Sericoderus Stephens, 1829 (= Gryphinus Redtenbacher, 1849, = Anisomeristes Matthews, 1886); Sericoderus lateralis (Gyllenhal, 1827) (= S. thoracicus Stephens, 1829, = S. forticornis Matthews. 1899, = S. visnyae Csiki, 1940); Microstagetus parvulus Wollaston, 1861 (= Anisomeristes doderoi Peyerimhoff, 1917); Corylophus Stephens, 1833 (= Oligarthrum Matthews, 1887, = Daubania Scott, 1917); Corylophus cassidoides (Marsham, 1802) (= C. sublaevipennis v. politus Reitter, 1896); Corylophus sublaevipennis Jacquelin du Val, 1859 (= C. nigripennis Rey, 1889, = C. reitteri Matthews, 1890); Teplinus velatus (Mulsant & Rey, 1861) (= T. alutaceus (Reitter, 1885); Teplinus matthewsi (Reitter, 1885) (= T. walkeri (Matthews, 1886), = T. demaisoni (Paulian, 1950), = T. peyerimhoffi (Paulian, 1950), = T. intermedius (lsraelson, 1980); Orthoperus Stephens, 1829 (= Pithophilus Heer, 1841, = Microsphera Redtenbacher, 1845, = Eutrilia Casey, 1900); Orthoperus brunnipes (Gyllenhal, 1806) (= O. kluki Wankowicz, 1865); O. pilosiusculus Jacquelin du Val, 1859 (= O. borrei Matthews, 1885, = O. schneideri Reitter, 1902); O. nigrescens Stephens, 1829 (= O. truncatus Stepens, 1829, = O. atomos Stephens, 1829, = O. coriaceus Mulsant &Rey, 1861, = O. mundus Matthews, 1885); O. anxius Mulsant & Rey, 1861 (= O. perexiguus Rey, 1889); O. punctatus Wankowicz, 1865 (= O. duplicatus Reitter, 1898); O. rogeri Kraatz, 1874 (= O. punctulatus Reitter, 1876); O. atomus (Gyllenhal, 1808) (= O. picea Stephens, 1829); O. aequalis Sharp, 1885 (= O. nitidulus Allen, 1942); O. corticalis (Redtenbacher, 1849) (= O. punctatulus Matthews, 1885, = O. improvisus Bruce, 1946); Gloeosoma Wollaston, 1854 (= Moronillus Jacquelin du Val, 1854, : Lewisium Matthews, 1899, = Sahlberginus Bruce, 1948); Gloeosoma velox Wollaston, 1854 (= Moronillus ruficollis Jacquelin du Val, 1854, = M. discolor Rosenhauer, 1856, = M. pumilus Reitter, 1884, = Rypobius obtusus Matthews, 1890, = Sahlberginus inexpectatus Bruce, 1948).
