About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and German

In 1832 Maximilian, Prince of Wied-Neuwied began a two-year journey through North America accompanied by his illustrator Carl Bodmer. This journey took them up the Missouri River to Fort McKenzie (near present day Great Falls, Montana) and resulted in many important natural history and anthropological observations. Maximilian and Bodmer were among the last to visit Native Americans in the interior before their populations were decimated by smallpox. The published account of their journey is one of the most sought-after publications on this subject. Bodmer's reputation as one of the foremost illustrators of the nineteenth century was established with his illustrations of Native Americans. Maximilian had a special interest in herpetology and made extensive observations and collections throughout this journey. He described several new species, including Hyla crucifer and Pseudemys scripta elegans.

Verzeichniss der Reptilien was one of his last publications and covers his herpetological observations during his two year journey through North America. Illustrated with seven beautifully hand-coloured plates of turtles and salamanders by Carl Bodmer. This reprint has taken several years to complete and is unlike any other herpetological reprint printed in over 100 years. All seven plates have been individually hand-coloured by Lara Carroll to match the original as closely as possible. The text and plates are printed on 100% cotton, mould-made paper imported from England. Bound copies are hand-bound by Harcourt Bindery in 1/4 leather with five raised bands, gilt lettering, and marbled boards. Unbound copies are also available for customers who wish to bind a copy to their own specifications.
