About this book

Please note (February 2013): we received word from the authors involved in this project that, although the University of Addis Abeba holds stock of all published volumes, the University authorities wish not to sell this work outside of Ethiopia. As such, the NHBS can unfortunately no longer supply this series.

The present volume is the second part of Volume 4 of Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and treats the family Asteraceae (Compositae).

This family has been the subject of many collaborative studies. Chemical and molecular data have relatively recently been added to the morphological data gathered about members of the family since 1816. Information on the biology and chemistry of the family was compiled for the first time in 1975 and pubhshed in 1977 [The Biology and Chemistry of the Compositae, Heywood et al. (eds.)]. Advances in Compositae Systematics was published in 1994 (Hind et al.). The author of the present volume has consulted and utilized the above and other recent publications.

The taxonomic account reflects the current situation in Asteraceae systematics, which involves changes in the circumscription of many species, genera and even tribes, triggered by new information obtained firom studies on DNA and applications of newer methods. Thitry-five genera not recorded in Cufodontis' Enumeratio are here substantiated, 12 genera are reduced to synonymy, and 3 genera are excluded since they occur only outside of the Flora area. Many new records represent recent collections of naturalized and/or introduced weedy taxa, fewer represent newly discovered wild plants.
