This operational laboratory handbook offers a standard set of soil physical measurement methods that are intended to be cost-effective and well-suited to land resource survey. Methods in the handbook require only one or two visits to a site over a short period. It focuses on practical aspects of measurement and guidance is provided on the interpretation of data wherever possible. The book begins with an introduction to land evaluation and then outlines prodedures for field sampling. Twenty chapters cover pore space relations, water retention, hydraulic conductivity, water table depth, dispersion, aggregation, particle size, shrinkage, Atterburg limits and strength. It gives an account of procedures for estimating soil physical properties from more readily available data and presents several applications to show how soil physical data can be integrated into land planning and management decisions.
