The Map of the Natural Vegetation of Europe, scale 1:2.5 million, is the product of intensive scientific collaboration over a twenty-year period involving geobotanists from 31 European countries and the Caucasus states. It is the first publication of its kind - in terms of level of international coordination, degree of detail and quality of presentation - and a cartographical tour de force. It lays significant foundations and will constitute a standard reference source on diverse questions of plant sociology, landscape ecology, nature conservation, environmental protection, sustainable land use, and environmentally benign planning on the European level. This explanatory Text contains introductory chapters on the evolution and accomplishment of the mapping project, on its scientific foundations (the vegetation maps, the geophysical, climatic and phytogeographical divisions, and the postglacial history of Europe's vegetation) and on the overall theoretical concept.
