This volume contains an introduction to 'Dublin's Fair City', together with information about Irish contributions to the historical development of the physical sciences. The greater part of the book is devoted to a series of articles by distinguished local authors describing aspects of Irish life to which the science of today is making important contributions: developing a research culture; the environment; agriculture; forestry; marine science; biomedical research; genetics and biotechnology; chemical and pharmaceutical sciences; information and communications technology; and Irish contributions to international science.
The island of Ireland has seen dramatic change since the last meeting of the BAAS in Dublin. This volume presents an outline of selected aspects of this continuing change, demonstrating the involvement of science and technololgy in them.
