64 pages, 2 colour maps
This publication presents the results of a vegetation survey of Bonaire (December 13th, 1998 - March 16th, 1999) that includes the description of terrain characteristics, vegetation structure, species composition and spatial patterns in the landscape. This resulted in a landscape-based vegetation map on a scale of 1:50,000. Its units are delineated and characterized on the basis of landscape-forming factors, such as geology, geomorphology, soil characteristics and vegetation. The quantitative aspects of the method used will allow the monitoring of possible changes taking place in the plant communities over time.
The flora of Bonaire has the same general characteristics as other Caribbean arid lands and just like that of the neighbouring islands of Cura#ao and Aruba has been quite extensively studied. Vegetation mapping in the present study was based on the landscape-guided method of the itc (International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth Sciences, The Netherlands)
In this method a combination of aerial photo-interpretation and stratified sampling is used. For the photo-interpretation, differences in the distinctive landscape types have been combined with differences in photo-features (tone, texture and spatial pattern).
Including two colour maps. A co-production with the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity Foundation.
