Biography

Douglas Ellory Pett obtained his first experience of large-scale gardening as Vicar of Gulval, Penzance, from 1961 to 1966. Later, in the 1980s, he pursued geological and other field studies in Cornwall, and was invited to organize the first professional and voluntary surveys of historic gardens for the newly-formed Cornwall Gardens Trust. He was a member of the Garden History Society; author of Creative Gardeners (Alison Hodge, 2005); The Parks and Gardens of Cornwall (Alison Hodge, 1998); editor of From A Cornish Bishop's Garden (Alison Hodge, 2001); co-author of The Historic Gardens of Cornwall (1991), and a regular contributor to The Cornish Garden. Margaret Grose was educated at Truro County Grammar School, and obtained a degree in Medieval and Modern History from the University of London. She worked in Truro City Library before becoming history teacher at Tremough Convent School. She obtained an MA in the History of Modern Art and Design from Falmouth College of Art, and subsequently published a book on the Historic Estate at Tremough. She is a member of the Garden History Society and the Cornwall Garden Society.

Media reviews

'comprehensive coverage of gardens to visit in Cornwall ... features more than 130 gardens, with glorious images' (The English Garden, May 2006) 'a valuable counterweight to the idea that, once you have seen The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project, there is little else to see in the county. ... describes the gardens' history and plants ... the photographs make each individual place look well worth visiting.' (Historic Gardens Foundation Newsletter, no. 21, May 2006) 'a visual treat... If you love visiting gardens, then this book is an absolute essential ... you are guaranteed to want to keep turning the pages ... will keep you occupied for hours planning your next garden excursions' (Cornwall Life, June/July 2006)
