About this book

Language: German

The photographic book to the flora of Vienna has now been published in a second, updated edition. Some photos have been replaced by better ones and the distribution maps have been updated with new finds.

Vienna has a fantastic diversity of plants and animals. The reason for this is the combination of different climate zones. In Vienna, both alpine plants and species from the Pannonian regions of the Hungarian deep plain live. Benefiting from Vienna's rich natural surroundings with green zones, nature reserves and even a national park, more than 2,400 species of plants can be found in this city.

Wiens Pflanzenwelt contains the most common, as well as the protected plant species of Vienna. Pictures, often including additional detailed pictures, data on the flowering period and on important features enable readers to identify species. This book enables an easy introduction to the knowledge on the plants of Vienna.

Botanical science is in a constant state of development. Genetic investigations change the boundaries of plant families or genera – and sometimes the names of species. The German and scientific names were matched with the Exkursionsflora für Österreich, Liechtenstein und Südtirol in order to ensure comparability for further, more intensive studies.

Additional supplements include some frequently planted trees with very characteristic fruits. Another new chapter deals with a current problem of nature conservation – invasive species. Some species have migrated or escaped from culture, displacing native plants and becoming a problem.
