Since the Second World War, much of Britain's broadleaved woodland has disappeared, to be replaced by blanket conifer afforestation. Despite intense public opposition, the small but powerful private forestry lobby exploits enormous Government subsidies made available through the Forestry Commission. The author argues that this body should be dismantled and replaced by a new body with a clear duty to protect and enhance Britain's woodland.
