About this book

An analysis of type collections of non-geniculate coralline red algae (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) housed at the Museum national d'Histore naturelle (Paris) and the historical role of the Museum and persons associated with these collections in the development of coralline systematics are presented. Following a historical sketch of cryptogamic botany at the Jardin des Plantes and the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, biographical data (including portraits and handwriting samples) are provided for deceased coralline researchers and persons with major herbaria at the Laboratoire de Cryptogamie (PC). These are followed by information on other collectors represented by non-geniculate coralline specimens and an analysis of the contributions to coralline systematics of the more important researchers who have had an association with the Jardin des Plantes and/or the Museum.
