An extensive overview of the present status of breeding waders in Europe. Within the Wader Study Group's project "Breeding Waders in Europe 2000", updated population estimates are compiled from 52 countries and regions in Europe, the eastern Arctic of North America and the Atlantic islands Madeira, the Azores and Canary Islands. A project network of 38 national and regional co-ordinators covered 35 countries and regions while estimates from the remaining countries were compiled and/or extrapolated from published sources.
Of 68 populations of waders breeding in Europe, there are reasonably good quality breeding data for 35, while another three are well monitored during winter counts. Although data quality has improved substantially over the last 20 years, almost half of European wader populations are still monitored so incompletely that it is impossible to assess population sizes or trends with a reasonable level of certainty.
According to this compilation, 12 European wader populations are of particular concern due to very small populations and/or rapid population reduction.
