Mankind has a longstanding fascination with elephants, the largest living land animals. Sadly, populations of these majestic mammals are declining, particularly in Asia, and they are all endangered, as indicated in the IUCN Red List. They are threatened by ivory poaching and by conflicts with local human populations, for example due to crop raiding.

This Wildpro volume "Elephants: Diseases and Treatment" is the first publication in the Wildpro Multimedia series to be researched specifically for conservation organisations and zoos. The module focuses on elephant diseases and their treatment, together with natural history information and a drug formulary. It is complemented by an extensive library including the 1910 publication "Elephants and their Diseases" by G.H. Evans.

Natural history information is provided on all three species of elephant - Asian, African savannah and African forest elephants - including size and appearance, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, natural diet and feeding behaviour, social and sexual behaviour, activity patterns, habitat, range and conservation.

All known diseases - viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic, toxic, micronutrient, physical (traumatic) and other (miscellaneous) - of elephants are described, together with their diagnosis and treatments. The diseases are categorised by disease agent type as well as by signs/system affected, with particular reference made to common and important diseases. Diseases are also linked from the elephant-specific sections of the Physical Examination of Mammals and Necropsy of Mammals pages.

Suggested dosages for many medications used in elephants are provided (courtesy of Elephant Care International), together with information about the various medication routes and a discussion of weight estimation and dose determination methods. Individual medication techniques for elephants are described in detail, as is trunk washing for TB detection.

'A very unique and important and progressive information source' Dr Harald Schwammer, Vienna Zoo
