This book pays tribute to an extraordinary man, born in Germany, who contributed much to Costa Rica. He entered the country in 1854, with a letter of recommendation from the famous naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, sent to the president Juan Rafael Mora. He marveled at Costa Rica's overwhelming nature, began to study with devotion, which resulted in many stories of great scientific value adorned with his rich lyricism in vivid descriptions of Costa Rica's mountains, especially after his visits to the Irazú and Barva volcanoes.

Ingresó al país en 1854, con una carta de recomendación del célebre naturalista Alexander von Humboldt, remitida al presidente Juan Rafael Mora.
