The genus Stachytarpheta Vahl is reviewed as it occurs in Brazil. A total of 79 species is recognised, five of these with subspecies or varieties. Sixteen species and nine subspecies or varieties are described as new; five new combinations are made. The morphology is described, and characters used in a cladistic analysis are discussed. An infrageneric system dividing the genus into 12 informal groups is also proposed. Illustrations and keys are provided.
