About this book

A guide to all of Alaska's national parks, which protect more than 41 million acres of the state's natural treasures, including active volcanoes, mountains and glaciers, vast areas of wilderness, fjords, giant brown bears, whales, and sea lions, and herds of migrating caribou.

This book provides detailed descriptions and full visiting information for the eight major scenic parks--Denali, Gates of the Arctic, Glacier Bay, Katmai, Kenai Fjords, Kobuk Valley, Lake Clark, and Wrangell-St. Elias--and suggests excursions to numerous smaller parks as well, ranging from the relatively accessible Chugach National Forest and the Misty Fjords and Admiralty Island National Monuments in the southeast to the really adventurous Cape Krusenstern National Monument and the Bering Land Bride National Preserve in the Arctic. In between there is the White Mountains National Recreation Area near Fairbanks, such wildlife preserves as the Alaska Bald Eagle Preserve near Haines, and historical parks like the Klondike Gold Rush and Iditarod Trail, along with many other extraordinary and unique places accessible by car, plane, or boat.

The guide tells how and when to visit and suggests hikes, fishing and canoeing spots, wildlife viewing sites, and innumerable other activities. Included too are guided drives and sidebars on many aspects of the state's culture, wildlife, and stunning landscape.
