About this book

All the mysterious aspects of this stark and compelling land are dramatically depicted in an astounding collection of photographs - from the fragility of the mist-enshrouded coastline in the west to the hot, dry wasteland of the interior. The cultural diversity of Namibia's sparse population has not escaped the camera's eye, nor has the plant life, much of it unique to this land. Also featured in the book is the wildlife - surprisingly abundant here - which has adapted to survive triumphantly in a harsh and unforgiving environment.

Photographer Jean du Plessis worked for the Cape Town newspaper Die Burger for 30 years, covering all major South African news and political events, as well as rugby and cricket matches and fashion shoots (some in the Namib Desert). His fascination with Namibia dates back to 1986, since when he has been to Namibia about 50 times, covering well over 200 000 kilometres. He published Desertscapes of Namibia with Struik in 2002. The introductions are by Toast Coetzer, who is from Cradock and has a degree in Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes University. He has worked as a freelance writer and photographer for the past 10 years, specialising in the fields of travel and arts and culture with a special focus on South African music. He is currently Senior Writer at Go! magazine. He lives in Cape Town, but spends almost half his year elsewhere. Kathryn McKay, who wrote the captions, began her writing career at Reader's Digest more than 10 years ago, before moving into the more creative world of advertising.
