Nepal comprises of only 0.1% of land area on a global scale, but it possesses a disproportionately rich diversity of flora and fauna at genetic, species and ecosystem levels. The Biodiversity Profiles of Nepal 1996 (BPN) was the first initiative of its kind to document all the information on Nepal's biodiversity recorded till the year 1995. However, a system needed to be established to update and verify all these information on a regular basis. Nepal Biodiversity resource Book (NBRB) was thus established to carry out those needs and give continuity to this initiative.
The objective of NBRB was to update 1996 Biodiversity Profiles focusing on the flora and fauna diversity implicitly in the Protected Areas, Ramsar Sites and World Heritage Sites of Nepal using published information between 1996 and 2005 and field verification. Thus, this book shows that in flora, the total number of flowering plant species recorded from Nepal has been counted to be 6666 - representing 1607 genera and 229 families by 2006 compared to 4259 species- representing 1447 genera and 194 families in 1995. In fauna, the current list includes 185 species of mammals of which four species are believed to be extinct from Nepal and there are four new additions along with the list of 187 species of fish. The number of bird species is 874 compared to 843 in 1995 and that of herpeto is 195 compared to 143 in 1995. All these information have been enlisted in accordance with the two bio-geographic realms which are the Palaearctic and the Palaeotropic realms and the two major zoogeographical kingdoms which are the Palaearctic in the north and the Indo-Malayan in the south along with the meticulous analysis of those biodiversity found in the Protected Areas, Ramsar Sites and the World Heritage Site of Nepal.
