About this book

The present compilation is an overview of Indian Stratigraphy and related applied aspects with an overtone on Hydrocarbon Exploration and covers a wide spectrum of topics ranging spatially from the tectonically complex collision margin of Indian plates in the Himalayan region to the pericratonic basins and temporarily from Proterozoic to Recent. This book covers various sub divisions of stratigraphy including paleoenvironments and paleogeography, hiatuses and rates of sedimentation, litho-bio-chrono-stratigraphy relative sea level fluctuations, paleoceanography, and application of foraminifera/fossils in sequence stratigraphy culminating with petroleum systems in the Indian basins.

The special topics include simple reconstruction of phylogeny of a family of foraminifera and resultant refinement of biochronostratigraphy, biochronohorizons useful in classification and correlation, foraminiferal criteria for reconstruction of T/R cycles and systems tracts towards building sequence stratigraphy, time transgressive nature of the lithounits recognized on the basis of foraminifera, value of mega fossils particularly Ammonites, a glimpse of the stratigraphic succession of Himalaya covering litho units, thickness, rates of sedimentation and paleoenvironments and some paleogeographic maps depicting the recent ideas on the distribution of land and sea since the Mesoproterozoic.
