Media reviews

For too many years birders visiting Brazil have had to make do without a decent field guide. Tomas Sigrist's new 'Guia de Campo' covers the birds of Eastern Brazil and although the plates vary in quality, even the poorer ones are better than previous guides. Some of the artwork for difficult groups like the antshrikes, antvireos, antwrens, antbirds and anthrushes is excellent. For each species the book has the name in English and Portuguese with a distribution map and habitat type, but unfortunately there are no voice descriptions.

For anyone planning to visit Eastern Brazil I would thoroughly recommend taking Sigrist along with the Collins Field Guide to Birds of South America, in preference to Souza's All the Birds of Brazil.
