About this book

Language: French

The French Agence des Aires Marines Protégées or Agency for Marine Protected Areas (which became the Agence Française pour la Biodiversité, or French Agency for Biodiversity in 2017) carried out extensive prospecting surveys between 2008 and 2010 on the faces of canyons and banks of French Mediterranean rocks. The mainland has been explored with the MedSeaCan campaign and western Corsica with the CorSeaCan campaign. The data were then processed, supplemented and formatted by GIS Posidonie (an environmental organization in Marseille) and IMBE (the Institut Méditerranéen de Biodiversité et d'Ecologie marine et continentale) for the Agence des Aires Marines Protégées.

This guide has been designed from photographic or video data to provide assistance in identifying the main species encountered in Mediterranean canyons using simple visual criteria. Each species profile presents both information from the surveys (photographs, bathymetric distribution, geographical distribution on a small map, observations from the videos), as well as more general information from bibliographic searches. This guide to the deep-sea fauna of the Mediterranean Sea is not exhaustive and does not present all the species observed during the campaigns, only the most emblematic or frequent in the submarine canyons.
