The first edition of Arboreal Flora of Chile was published in book-form in 1984. This, the second edition, has been published as a CD-ROM, and has been significantly enhanced by the addition of colour figures, photographs and distribution maps for each species. It was constructed using the program Linnaeus II, developed by ETI Bioinformatics in Amsterdam.
This publication describes all the arboreal native trees of continental Chile, the Archipelago of Juan Fernandez and the Island of Pascua. The information is complemented with a key for the identification of the species and a glossary of botanical terms. The introduction covers the history of the botanical contributions towards descriptions of the Chilean trees, made by outstanding naturalists such as Juan Ignacio Molina, Hipolito Ruiz and Jose Pavon, Augusto P. De Candolle, William J. Hooker and George Arnott, David Don, Claudio Gay, Rodulfo A. Philippi and Karl Reiche, among others. In addition, there is useful data on native and introduced species, scientific importance of the forest and a commentary on the destruction of the Southern-most forest of the world. Each species is accompanied by its description, a list of synonyms and common names, the taxonomic classification, bibliography, images, geographic distribution, ecological considerations and uses for the trees.
