Heredity is a key concept in biology. Understanding the processes
that determine the expression and transmission of heritable traits requires an integrated approach from the level of the individual (as part of a family or population), to cells, and finally to DNA, RNA and proteins. This fourth module in the Beating the Biology Book series relates the basics of heredity to relevant phenomena in the world around us. The programme is enriched with numerous examples and animations that illustrate the importance of genetics in human development and health, and differences between individuals and ethnic groups.

In addition, a series of human genome fact sheets provides information on the main characteristics of the human genome, covering DNA and genes, chromosomes, the mitochondrial genome, gene mutations, chromosome mutations, genetics of cancer and genetics of immunity. As in the acclaimed previous modules, a simple navigation system allows switching between levels and topics without the risk of "losing track". An index contains over 500 entries and provides direct access to details. A diagnostic test with feedback helps students to grasp fundamental concepts.
