About this book

The atmospheric processes in mana (TM)s direct environment a" in the lower 100 a" 1000 metres of the atmosphere and in areas of only several kilometres extent form the core of this book. The second edition has been adapted to developments during recent years as well as being supplemented by the newest research results. It offers fundamental information in applied meteorology such as biometeorology, agricultural meteorology, hydro-meteorology, environmental meteorology and technical meteorology, as well as for biochemistry with selected examples from these areas. Transport processes and material exchanges between the atmosphere and the eartha (TM)s surface constitute another important aspect, whereby covered and heterogenic areas receive special emphasis. The author discusses the secondary branches of theory, metrology, experimental procedure and modelling in such a way, that they can be used separately for teaching, research and in practice.

From the reviews: "Micrometeorology is the English translation of ! original German text, and it builds on Foken's 30 years of experience in experimental micrometeorology. ! The book is geared for postgraduate scientists and practicing experts in meteorology, surface climatology, air pollution, and other environment applications. ! If you ! need to understand the turbulent surface layer, you will want to get this book. ! This is an excellent handbook and reference for experimental micrometeorology in the atmospheric surface layer." (Roland Stull, EOS, Vol. 90 (1), January, 2009)

Biography

Thomas Foken was born in 1949 in Zwickau, Germany. He studied meteorology in Berlin, and received his Ph.D. in 1978 in Leipzig. His research topic was marine micrometeorology. He received his second doctor's degree in 1990 in Berlin. From 1981 to 1997 he was the Head of Laboratories of the Meteorological Service of the GDR (after 1990 the German Meteorological Service) at the Meteorological Observatories in Potsdam and Lindenberg. In 1997, Dr. Foken became Professor of Micrometeorology at the University of Bayreuth. He has taught courses on micrometeorology and geoecology in Berlin, Potsdam and Bayreuth; he has published numerous scientific papers, and also participated in national and international experiments and research projects.
