Los hongos se han estudiado muy poco, a pesar de su gran importancia económica y ecológica. Se estima que en el mundo hay 1.500.000 especies, pero sólo se han identificado entre 5% y 10%. De ese porcentaje (unas 72.000 especies), la mayoría pertenece al grupo taxonómico Ascomycota (ascomicetes). La mayoría de los ascomicetes son tan pequeños que solo se pueden ver con lupa o microscopio, y por eso se les llama microhongos.
