About this book

Language: French

In the fourth volume of the Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière, originally published in 1753, Buffon and Daubenton begin the zoological part of their project and, as they announced from the start, they begin by treating domestic quadrupeds, following for each species a plan which will be kept until the end of this series: first the "history" of the animal by Buffon, then the description, anatomical by Daubenton and finally, by the same, a presentation of the samples of the animal kept in the King's Cabinet. Engraved plates complete this portrait. This volume includes the first three species (the horse, the donkey and the ox), which gave Buffon the opportunity to achieve all his talent as a writer and to pursue his philosophical and scientific reflection: this is how he examine the hypothesis of a common origin of species, to immediately reject it. These three articles are preliminary to general texts by Buffon and Daubenton, in particular to a "Discours sur la Nature des Animaux" in which Buffon returns at length to the singularity of man and takes a critical look at the faculties attributed to animals.
