Knowledge of downy mildew pathogens and diseases has increased significantly in the areas of taxonomy, biology and molecular biology, mechanisms of resistance, population biology and ecology, epidemiology and chemical control. The opportunity to update comprehensively the major advances in these areas arose from the International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP) held in August 2008 at Torino (Italy).
