About this book

This special issue of "Zoology in the Middle East" is a collection of papers that have been compiled as part of the recognition and celebration of a decade of successful annual conservation workshops hosted by the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA). Topics include region-wide reviews of priorities for plant conservation, migration flyways, protected area networks, progress towards the development of Trans-Boundary Conservation Areas, application of the Hotspot concept, the first results of a systematic conservation assessment for the Arabian Peninsula, and future prospects for reintroduction and restoration. Other articles cover threats to the biodiversity of Socotra, the role of captive breeding, the Arabian leopard captive breeding programme, and status and conservation reviews including Jordanian lizards, Arabian oryx, migratory birds, and small carnivores. This volume of selected, peer-reviewed papers extends over a wide taxonomic and regional range, and includes a variety of research, planning and conservation management approaches. It is aimed to review progress and highlight future directions for biodiversity conservation on the Arabian Peninsula.
